Things you should know about Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Tri-guitar approach of Lynyrd Skynyrd and raw working-class mindset made the band famous during the 1970s Southern rock boom.
History
Lynyrd Skynyrd is a Jacksonville, Florida-based American rock band consisting of lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, bass guitarist Larry Junstrom, and drummer Bob Burns, who founded My Backyard in 1964. Before settling on “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in 1969, the band spent five years performing tiny venues under numerous labels and with many composition changes.
Challenges faced by the band
During the band’s early years, Lynard Skynyrd faced a number of difficulties. Many members were forced to leave the band due to health difficulties or other factors. However, the band’s worst experience came in 1977, when the band was at its peak. On October 20, 1977, the band was on their way back from performing at Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina, when their plane’s fuel ran out, and it crashed between the woods. Unfortunately, Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines were killed on the spot, along with backup vocalist Cassie Gaines, the assistant road manager, and the two pilots. Other members, including the tour manager and other staff members, were injured but survived.
Following this tragic incident, the band ceased performing regularly, only taking the stage on rare occasions. In the aftermath of the crash, some members turned to religious music for solace and healing, finding comfort in its spiritual depth. For some, exploring spiritual teachings provided a profound sense of peace and understanding, further enriching their journey towards recovery.
Finally, the Surviving members reformed in 1987, with Johnny Van Zant, Van Zant’s younger brother, singing lead. A number of country performers, like Travis Tritt, welcomed the new Skynyrd.
Success in music
The band’s debut album, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd, was released in 1973. With its dynamic interaction of three lead guitars, “Free Bird,” a tribute to the late Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band, became an instant hit. At the same time, “Sweet Home Alabama,” a rebuttal to Neil Young’s disdainful “Southern Man,” initiated Second Helping (1974) and defined the band as a Southern rock forefront in the process.
After the deaths of the band’s three original members in 1977, the album Street Survivors went platinum and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200.
Band’s Achievements
A ranking of the 100 greatest artists of all time by Rolling Stone put the band No. 95.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame winners Lynard Skynyrd were announced in November of 2005.
As of 2010, another country tribute, Sweet Home Alabama – The Country Music Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd, had been produced, with Jay Joyce as the primary producer.
On April 4, 2017, a biopic film project was officially unveiled. Street Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash was released in June 2020.
A documentary called “If I Leave Here Tomorrow” by Stephen Kijak premiered at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, on March 13, 2018.

Learn about the journey of Aerosmith
Allow yourself to be swept away by Aerosmith’s hardcore music, a Boston-based American rock band widely known as the “Bad Boys of Boston” and “America’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band,” along with the songwriting duo. Tyler and Perry’s dubbed as the “Toxic Twins.”
Formation of the band
Although the band was formed in Boston in 1970, some of its members had previously been members of another band. When Perry and Hamilton met Tyler, Kramer, and Ray Tabano and formed Aerosmith, they were in Jam Band. Whitford, on the other hand, took Tabano’s place in 1971. It was essentially a fusion of several individuals from other bands that came together to form a group that eventually became successful.
Genre
Aerosmith is well-known for its pop-rock, heavy metal, glam metal, rhythm and blues, and rock n roll music. The band was a significant arena-rock point of interest in the late 1970s, and it became even more successful during a career rebirth in the mid-1980s.
Influence
Having drawn inspiration from The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, and the New York Dolls, Aerosmith went on to profoundly impact countless other bands and musicians. As a result of Aerosmith’s effect on the following generation of hard rock and heavy metal bands, their legacy continues today. Many bands have drawn inspiration from Joe Perry and Brad Whitford’s onstage chemistry, particularly Guns N’ Roses.
Recognition
In 1973, the band released their self-titled debut album. In 1974, they released Get Your Wings as a follow-up to their debut album. It wasn’t until Toys in the Attic (1975) and Rocks (1976) that the audience widely recognized them.
Awards
The band didn’t start winning prizes until the late 1980s and 1990s.
In 1987, Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C. received the Soul Train Music Award for Best Rap (Single) for their remix of Walk Way.
In 1990, Aerosmith won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the first time.
In the 1990s, the band went on to win a total of four similar awards for Janie’s Got a Gun, Livin’ on the Edge, Crazy, and Pink received these accolades.

Overall Journey
The band was top-rated in the United States and Japan during the mid-to-late 1970s, but they failed to impact the United Kingdom. Despite this, they were one of America’s most successful hard rock bands in the mid to late 1970s. However, following the exits of Perry and Whitford, their immense popularity began to decline.
The band’s sound has also been used in video games, including the Dead or Alive and Grand Theft Auto series, and certain video games, such as Quest for Fame and Revolution X, are themed on the band. When Aerosmith released their Guitar Hero game, it became the most popular band-centric video game on both Guitar Hero and Rock Band platforms, making them the first band to have a game designed.
Aerosmith announced a production contract with Universal Music Group on August 23, 2021, covering the band’s entire career.
